Football fans are in for a treat as week three of the 2020 NFL season approaches.
Today we will take a look at the projected top five players for the 2020 season along with various prop investment opportunities that bookmakers are offering them.
Here they are, the best players in the league in 2020:
1. Patrick Mahomes (QB | Kansas City Chiefs)
The 24-year-old Super Bowl champion is coming off of a dream season that ended in him lifting the Lombardi Trophy and securing the biggest contract in the history of North American sports (10 years, $503 million).
Mahomes led the league in QBR – a measurement of all of a quarterback’s contributions to winning – and threw 4,031 passing yards with only five interceptions. He is still young and should keep on betting better. It’s hard to argue against his case for being the best player in the league this year.
ESPN projection: 4,477 passing yards, 33 TDs, 10 INT (281 rushing yards)
Prop odds: +400 to win the MVP, -110 over or under 4500.5 passing yards
2. Aaron Donald (DT | Los Angeles Rams)
The two-time Defensive Player of the Year is the favorite for the trophy again this year. He recorded a pass rush win rate of 24.5% last season, leading all interior linemen in the league.
The 29-year-old veteran is in a category of his own on the defensive end. His peers ranked him as the best player in the league in 2019. Having declared that he is in the best shape of his life, we should see another big year from Donald.
ESPN projection: 49 tackles, 10 sacks, 2 forced fumbles
Prop odds: +800 to win DPOY, +1200 for most sacks
3. Lamar Jackson (QB | Baltimore Ravens)
The unanimous MVP in 2019, Jackson recorded a league-leading 36 touchdown passes and set a new record for rushing yards by a quarterback (1,206). Jackson’s Ravens are seen as the second likeliest team after the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl this season, and he’s also the top candidate to challenge Mahomes for MVP this year.
ESPN projection: 3,427 passing yards, 26 TDs, 10 INT (901 rushing yards)
Prop odds: +700 to win MVP, -110 over or under 3250.5 passing yards
4. Russell Wilson (QB | Seattle Seahawks)
Another quarterback on the list, Wilson is also the third favorite for MVP this year at +800. He is one of the best in the game at throwing the ball deep – he led the league last season with 22 completions that traveled at least 25 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. The Seahawks have plenty of speed at the wide receiver spot, which should play to this strength.
ESPN projection: 3,668 passing yards, 29 TDs, 9 INT (397 rushing yards)
Prop odds: +800 to win MVP, -110 over or under 3900.5 passing yards
5. Michael Thomas (WR | New Orleans Saints)
The 27-year-old wide receiver broke the NFL record for single-season catches at 149 while recording 9 touchdowns. He won the AP Offensive Player of the Year, being the first WR to do so since 1993.
At +1200 to win the Super Bowl this season, the Saints are a force to be reckoned with and Thomas is a major reason for that.
ESPN projection: 114 catches, 1,352 yards, 9 TDs
Prop odds: -105 for over 1375.5 receiving yards (-117 for under), +100 for over 8.5 touchdowns (-121 for under), +350 for most receptions
Investing in player props
While we do not have recommendations for you for the prop investment opportunities listed in this article, it’s easy to spot some interesting points for further research.
For example, there is a pretty significant gap between Lamar Jackson’s projected passing yards (3,427) and the over/under line that bookmakers are giving (3,250.5). Taking a more thorough look at other projections and finding out how accurate these have been could end up in uncovering an interesting investment opportunity.
And when it comes to MVP, one could invest in all three of the quarterbacks in this article and secure a profit if one of them ends up lifting the trophy.
Whatever your investment hypothesis ends up being, make sure to research it thoroughly and compare it to other opportunities that are out there.
