The 101st National Football League season is back with the first full week of the season in the books!
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a lot of uncertainty and compromises for many sport seasons, but football seems to be going full steam ahead, and we couldn’t be more excited.
Read on and stay tuned for plenty of more as we ramp up our NFL coverage here at the ScoreMetrics Lab!
Key facts for the 2020 NFL season
Week one went off without a hitch. The playoffs are set to start January 9, 2021 and Super Bowl LV will be played February 7 at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
The Kansas City Chiefs are the bookmakers’ favorites to win it all again this year at around +600, but the Baltimore Ravens are a close second at +650. The 49ers, the Saints and Tom Brady’s Buccaneers make up for the rest of the top five according to oddsmakers.

There is also excitement in the air in Nevada as the Raiders have completed their move to Las Vegas. Having an NFL team in Sin City is a huge deal for sports fans in the state, and you only have to look at the success story of the city’s NHL team, the Knights, to see how much potential there is for running a major league team in Vegas. The bookmakers in the state should also see a surge in NFL action.
The Raiders will play their home games at the newly opened 65,000-seater Allegiant Stadium. The $1.8 billion stadium will host its first home game on September 21, with the New Orleans Saints coming to town for a Monday Night Football game.
In other developments, the era of the Redskins is finally over in Washington after decades of controversy surrounding the name and branding of the franchise. Now temporarily known as the Washington Football Team, the franchise will reveal a new permanent name at some point in the near future.
NFL investing considerations
While the MLB and NBA seasons had to be cut short and altered to fit the current COVID-19 reality, the NFL season should see a normal amount of games played. This is great news for sports traders as it gives us more trading opportunities and removes the uncertainty caused by smaller than usual sample sizes.
Of course, some players have opted out of the season and it’s also possible that others will catch the virus during the year. And it’s hard to say what the effect of mostly empty stadiums will be. But other than that, we have our fingers crossed for a rather “normal” season in 2020.
There’s plenty of ways to approach the NFL market. For example, we have previously touched on the performance of Super Bowl favorites, the best quarterbacks as investments, and handicapping offensive lines.
We will be attacking the market again with various fine-tuned sports trading systems in our arsenal.
Whatever your approach is, make sure that you have the right mindset for long-term success.
The legal football betting market is exploding
Over $250 Million was bet legally on Super Bowl LIV, out of which Nevada accounted for approximately $155 million, while New Jersey’s handle was at $54 million.
The American Gaming Association has estimated that roughly 97% of all of the wagers on the Super Bowl are made illegally. With plenty of new legal sports betting markets opening and other ones maturing, we will most definitely see another record-breaking year when the 2020 season concludes.
Lively markets also mean a wider range of investment options available, which in turn gives us room to innovate. Earlier this year, we basically gave our readers free money when John Todora, our head trader, introduced his system for the NFL Draft, which netted a solid 65% ROI.
And with the ScoreMetrics football systems returning 168% last season, we are looking forward to another year of entertaining games and amazing gains.
